Vehicles in German Town Found Smeared with Nazi Symbols in Blood, Police Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Police
Police reported they were alerted by a resident who noticed a vehicle in Hanau covered with reddish liquid

Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.

Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.

An important representative stated the incident left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
