The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
