Educating a Baby to Develop into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The company behind the advert claims that what looks like "luxury or oddity" is truly "deliberate commitment in early education".

"A family based in north London is looking for an extraordinary and skilled instructor to guide their youngest child on his initial journey to becoming an English gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might naturally overlook the phrase "beginning" as mere an expression.

Yet, it may be the crucial element of this unusual job advert, as it seeks to find a teacher for a one-year-old.

Numerous of applications have already been received since the unidentified family published their search for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "a uniquely qualified person".

In recent few weeks, the advert has gained interest throughout the media, with several questioning why?

Forward-Thinking Method

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is supporting the family in their hunt, said that despite first doubt, he found the concept "far sighted", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he mentioned they appreciated the unconventional character of their demand, and how early in age their son is.

But, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had held off until their firstborn was five, and by that point "cultural bias had by then set in".

What exactly did the family mean by "cultural bias"?

It's "everything", Adam answered. "The manner you eat, how you speak".

He said the elder child had picked up "very nuanced, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural ways. The family told the consultant they hoped to prevent this pattern to happen again with their younger child.

The intention: To bring in a UK tutor, who needs to speak with RP, to guide the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm claim the post has started a larger conversation about how parents perceive learning, advantage and the function of home and culture in development.

Osmotic Learning

"A lot of the development at the beginning here is kind of acquired indirectly," stated the expert.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will pick up the British traits they want to instil.

Adam said the tutor must be somebody who went to "the right kinds of schools – similar types of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor must be the suitable individual, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, simply by nature," he added.

Expense Not a Factor

The family informed the expert the successful candidate should preferably also have understanding of or interest in equestrian activities, skiing, artistic pursuits and instrumental training so as to shape the child in a wide range of hobbies.

Additionally though, he explained the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "pony-riding and starting an instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's minds, assisting their son develop into a "British gentleman" will bring about achievement and provide access.

"Considering the pros and cons of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he notes.

However, despite all this instruction in "UK identity", might the child adopt so-called cultural bias from the multicultural family he resides with anyway?

"Yes", answered the CEO. "The parents realize this may not work, but they've just taken the attitude of, 'why not attempt it and let's go as soon as we can', because the price of it is not a concern," he said.

Overly Optimistic

Several in the education sector who share those doubts.

Peter Cui, chief executive of an educational organization, who supplies personal educators, stated that "the journey of adopting dual cultures, or actually, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not manufactured."

He wrote that he had moved from China to the United Kingdom at the period of seven, and had been brought up experiencing and practicing both cultures. He continued to learn at the University of Cambridge.

Peter Cui was the first individual hailing from China to be chosen to the post of Finance Head of the university debating society.

"The idea that a single person can serve as a living vessel of UK identity, a person who can in some way transplant the characteristics of a English gentleman upon a one-year-old child, strikes me as optimistic and impractical," he commented.

"In my experience, employing a distinctly English tutor from early childhood will will not instantly create the outcome they want.

"I never had that kind of mentor, and yet I have been fortunate enough to live several of the opportunities they aspire for their son."

He stated: "The truth is, cultural identity cannot be dictated from the external environment; it must be embraced, and it must come from within."

Buying Britishness

Of course, Britishness is something Adam thinks can be instructed – and marketed.

"In my view the fact that the global community views us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
